Luang Prabang City Tour - 1 Day (A)

A one day excursion to see this UNESCO World Heritage Site.

 

You will see the famous temples, the royal palace, colonical architecture and stunning mountain backdrop of the former capital of Laos.

 

The day starts at 8am from your hotel and we visit Wat Visoun built in 1898 based on the original from 1513 and houses numerous religious art treasures.

 

Then we visit Wat Xieng Thong a royal temple built on the banks of the Mekong in 1559 and relatively undamaged despite the years and numerous invasions. This Wat is extensively decorated with carvings, murals and mosaics. Then we take a short boat ride to see Wat Long Khun, Wat Chomphet and the unusual temple of Wat Tham Xieng Maen with it's two decaying spirit houses.

 

We then cross back over the Mekong for lunch at a local restaurant. After lunch we visit Haw Kham which was built for the King and his family during colonial times and is now a national museum.

 

We will then visit Wat Mai which sits at the foot of Mount Phousi, this is the largest temple in Luang Prabang and has Buddha's life story inscribed in gold relief on it's facade.

 

We end the day climbing Phousi Hill for the famous panoramic view from the town centre to the mighty Mekong before returning to your hotel.

Then we visit Wat Phra Phome Phao Santi Chedi, a bell shaped stupa built in 1959 based on the Shwedagon Pagod in Yangon.

 

We will visit the tomb of French explorer Henry Mouhot on the riverbank of the Nam Khan. Henry Mouhot showed Angkor Wat to the world and his grave was neglected for decades until being discoverd in 1990.

 

Then we go to Ban Phanom which is a weaver's village a few kilometres from Luang Prabang. Populated by Thai Lue it is well known for cotton and silk hand-weaving. Here you can see how the local cloth is made and have an opportunity to buy some if you wish.

Then we take a boat ride along the Mekong to see the Pak Ou caves set inside the rocky walls of the sandstone mountains by the Nam Ou and the Mekong. The caves are inhabited by thousands of Buddha statues, some more than 300 years old. Monks used to live in these caves and while Laos was still a monarchy the King used to visit every year.

 

We end the day climbing Phousi Hill for the famous panoramic view from the town centre to the mighty Mekong before returning to your hotel.
