Lost in Laos - 4 Day Tour

A four day tour taking in the sites of southern Laos, including the World Heritage Site of Wat Phu, elephant riding to Phu Asa temple in the heart of Xe Pian Protected Area, and the wetlands of Si Phan Don where you can kayak, raft or take a boat ride.

 

Day 1: Ban Kiat Ngong

9am departure from Pakse to the town of Ban Kiat Ngong. This town is situated in the Xe Pian Natural Protected Area and a great place for bird watching enthusiasts. From Ban Kiat Ngong we will take a one and a half hour elephant ride to Phu Asa a temple ount in the heart of the protected area. On our return we will have lunch before visiting Wat Um Muang also know as Tomo Temple in a surreal jungle setting 20km from Chamapsak where we will enjoy our evening on the Mekong river. For those who prefer a homestay please enquire about the option of visiting Don Daeng island.

 

Day 2: Wat Phu - Don Khong

We take a short dirve to Wat Phu. Wat Phu is a National Heritage Site that was built in the 6th century by the Khmer's and was originally used to worship the Hindu God Shiva and other deity's before being converted into a Buddhist temple in later centuries. Wat Phu was considered the centre of the Khmer Kingdom until it was moved to Angkor Wat in the 12th century.

 

After lunch in Champasak we head towards Don Khong where you will spend the night. You can enjoy an afternoon cycling around the largest of the 4,000 islands.

 

Day 3: Island meander

10.00am departure from Don Khone (or 8.30 from Pakse) we then drift down the Mekong in kayaks taking in the beauty of these natural wetlands. Enjoy the magnificence of the Mekong at it's widest point. We sill stop at one of the many beaches to break for lunch and a swim and some time to relax. After lunch we get back into the kayaks and make our way towards thriving Don Det on the jewels of the Mekong.

 

Passing by Don Det we will see the old ferry and old French railway bridge that seperate Don Det from Don Khone. We will stop here for a night at a bungalow overlooking the Mekong and the French bridge. Your luggage will be transported and waiting ffor you when you arrive.

 

Day 4:  Kayaking, Rafting or Boating

Departing from Don Khone at 8.30 after breakfast we will visit Liphi waterfall and the old French railway bridge before heading out to see the rare Irrawaddy dolphins.
